French Mantle Clocks

Earlier mantle clocks were made of using porcelain, ormolu or wood. In 1860 French mantle clocks were made up using onyx, marble or slate. Production of French mantle clocks was very expensive; therefore, when American companies started their production they used iron or woods instead of using marble, slate or onyx.

In modern times some companies even uses brass to make different styles of mantle timepieces. Woods for French clocks were typically cherry or oak.

set usually consist of two decorative and highly ornamental pieces which are set in the sides of the center clock. The center clock of the French clock set has beautiful statues made up of bronze or cast speltzer.

Although many French mantle clocks are ornate, some display a bit of whimsy like the clock shown here portraying a French Bulldog.

The dining area would always have a room for a large wall clock because of two reasons. Firstly, members of the household spend a lot of time in the dining area that goes beyond just having meals. There will always be a need to check the time in doing those expected activities. Secondly, a handsome looking clock would be second to best to having an artwork on the wall in terms of decorative purposes. Decent clocks would already have a huge impact and comparing it to the cost of a painting or a sculpture would prove that it is a lot more practical.

Walls are usually decorated by different kinds of artwork and these would be solely for aesthetic purposes.
