French Mantle Clocks

Earlier mantle clocks were made of using porcelain, ormolu or wood. In 1860 French mantle clocks were made up using onyx, marble or slate. Production of French mantle clocks was very expensive; therefore, when American companies started their production they used iron or woods instead of using marble, slate or onyx.

In modern times some companies even uses brass to make different styles of mantle timepieces. Woods for French clocks were typically cherry or oak.

French mantle clocks set usually consist of two decorative and highly ornamental pieces which are set in the sides of the center clock. The center clock of the French clock set has beautiful statues made up of bronze or cast speltzer.

Although many French mantle clocks are ornate, some display a bit of whimsy like the clock shown here portraying a French Bulldog.

Mantle clocks can make use of different materials. There are wooden clocks in varied types of hard woods. There are also those that make use of different kinds of metals such as cast iron, copper, brass and stainless steel. More contemporary ones would make use of ceramic, glass and a combination of plastics. There are also those that are made of cheaper materials such as resin that have finishing that duplicates more luxurious look and feel.

Mantle clocks come in many different shapes other than the well-varied materials used for its exterior. There is no such thing as a perfect design for a mantle clock but there is such a thing as fitting one in the theme that the table and the room has. For example, if the table is in a room that has primitive decorating style then it would make sense to take advantage of clocks with the same designs.
